Special Services

Special Services

While all children grow and change at their own rates, some children may experience delays in their development. Some children are born with conditions that cause these delays and others develop the delays over time. Many of these conditions can be helped or corrected if special services are provided. The earlier these services are provided, the better they are for the child.

Special Services include:

Disabilities

  • every child receives sreenings consisting of speech, vision, hearing, and developmental tests

Mental Health

  • every child receives behavioral screening
  • Head Start staff works with parents throughout the year to identify any concerns about the child (temper tantrums, bed-wetting, how to talk to children about divorce, coping with stress of parenting, etc.)

  • help is offered for making referrals to the appropriate professionals if needed

Transition

  • Head Start helps families and children learn what to expect through attending registration, orientation, and open house activities as well as parent meetings and trainings throughout the year

  • provide information to prepare the child and family for transition into Kindergarten

Head Start works closely with the ARIN Intermdeiate Unit (IU) 28 to provide any special services a child may need. ARIN IU 28 is legally responsible for providing these services. Representatives from ARIN become involved with the process beginning with the referral for evaluation. This guarantees that your child will continue to receive the care he or she needs even if you leave the Head Start program.

Head Start provides an inclusive environment for children with different abilities and disabilities. We plan activities to meet the individual needs of each child
